Internet Marketing Scams and Hype – Recognizing a Scam from the Hype

First of all you should recognize that in internet marketing there are scams and there is hype.  I define scams as come-ons for a fee which cannot possibly produce for you what is claimed.  I call hype exaggerations that stretch the realm of possibility.  These are not blatantly impossible to achieve although improbable.  So if you recognize that an offer is hype, it may be that if it is reasonably enough priced, and you discount the promises to what is realistic, it is still worth while.  As you receive many offers that are scams, you receive many more that are hype.  So the trick to recognizing a scam is to identify it from all the hype that you receive.  To do this you must have an idea of which claims are within reason and which are not.Next it is useless to explain particular scams.  There are so many it would be impossible.  What we can do, however, is to identify types of claims that are not reasonable and therefor are scams.  Here is a list of some of them.  Obviously, all come with a price.  So please if I do not repeat in each one that it is for a fee, please forgive me.1. Claims that your web site will be submitted to an exorbitant number of search engines.  I do not know how many there actually are at this point, but from a practical point of view there are only five that really count.  Any claim of submission to more that ten is an unrealistic claim.  Secondly, you can submit your web site directly to these five (and any others).  Thirdly, if you do the kind of things you should be doing in your internet marketing program, then these search engines will find your site by themselves.2. Claims that someone will achieve a top ranking for your web site.  This is impossible as no one has any control over the search engines nor is completely sure exactly what is needed to achieve a top rating.  I have heard experts say that they think that this way is better than another, but each search engine’s algorithms are a closely held secret.  Secondly, you can achieve a top ranking on your own if your long-tailed key words are in a sufficiently small niche.  If you can do this in a niche that is also lucrative , you don’t need to pay anybody.  This is what your internet marketing program should be aiming for and you can do it on your own.3. You will receive many claims from marketers that they can generate traffic for you.  These often come from pretty reputable internet marketers.  However, for someone to do this for you realistically would be a very expensive operation requiring extensive time and effort.  It maybe more hype that scam, but you should stay away from it so let’s call it a scam.4. Claims that you can buy lists that you can solicit.  This is kind of like point three above.  These claims also can come from reputable marketers, but you probably cannot really use purchase lists.  If you do, your auto responder may claim you are spamming and shut you down.  And they would be right.  After all, you do not know who is on the list, they have not given you permission to email them, so you email message from their point of view is spam.  So again, call it a scam or hype, but do not buy email lists.5. There is one last deal that is really more hype that a scam, but you should be careful of it.  These are the coaching programs that will make you wealthy.  They do not really guarantee wealth, but they lead you on to think that your lofty dreams can come true.  They are also expensive, of course.  I won’t say that they are worthless, and the better ones will teach you a lot about internet marketing.  In the end how successful you will be is another matter.  If you are approached by one of the several internet marketers that offer these programs,  remember that the promises are probably exaggerated.  You may end up a great but broke internet marketer.  On the other hand what you learn may make you financially successful.  Just be careful.I hope reading this article will help you sort out a scam from the hype and maybe even be able to evaluate better the hype.  Be careful, but have fun in your ride in the internet marketing world.
